Robert Motherwell: Prints (2024)

  • "If an artist is really good, he adapts to the particular quality that an etching can do that nothing else can do. Or, a certain other quality that a Bavarian limestone in lithography has that nothing else has, including the best painting in the world. It's something different...an abnormal sensitivity to the quality of the medium."

    Robert Motherwell, 1984

  • Print-making is my hobby, my mistress…When the edition is finally o.k., and goes to press and you see the first fresh print,it is with ecstasy. All struggle has vanished. There is a virgin birth, fresh and perfect, like Venus arising from the sea. Good prints, properly taken care of,never lose this virgin beauty, no more than medieval stained glass.

    Robert Motherwell,Summer Sign(1990)

Motherwell smoked Lucky Strikes, but in his collage life he smokes Gauloises, around whose blue packets he now organises one composition after another, 'exotic tome precisely because in the normal course of things I don't smoke French cigarettes'.And by incorporating Gauloises packets he makes deft and condensed allusionto 'French blue': to the Mediterranean and the palette of Matisse…to the smoke coiling up in a Cubist assemblage
